Shackleton and the Endurance - Comic Book ( RL.6.7, CCRA.R.7 )

(1)
This is a twelve page comic book version of Ernest Shackleton's expedition to Antarctica aboard the Endurance. It is an adaptation of journal entries from the days around the time of the destruction of the Endurance by ice floes. The language has been edited to appeal to learners of ESL/EFL or it can be used as an introduction to the topic for younger readers. The images used for this are taken from an animated video which will be published shortly. The comic consists of four journal entries and this version also contains a set of questions based on the text with an answer page and simple map of Antarctica. It is meant as an alternative introduction to the story for which there are many full size novels available. #Important: The strange characters that replace word spaces in the product view here are an artifact of this site. The PDF downloads do not have this problem. If you are concerned about this, please download my free product which suffers from the same viewing problem here: https://www.tes.com/us/teacher-lessons/frankenstein-comic-free-version-11135372 1. There are three versions of the comic. A PDF full color version, a low resolution easy to print version and an ePUB version that can be used in slideshow mode on a computer or tablet. 2. There are two essay prompts for expansion work including writing a fictional dictioanry entry from the Endurance and another for researching the topic of courage and endurance. 3. This also contains links for several websites that contain further background and resources for a more in depth look at the story. Murder Mystery 2 - Video Based Interactive Story

(0)
My second fun and engaging interactive murder mystery that can be adapted for any student grade. The focus of this one is on witness observation and deduction from visual and aural clues within the story. This resource can be used to practice a variety of different skills, including the basics of listening, writing, vocabulary and grammar or more advanced skills such as use of inference and critical thinking. Great for regular writing classes, group work, homework assignment or a fun fill in class. The main advantage of this resource is that the teacher can mix and match the materials outlined below to work with any class. There are materials for print only, display (slideshow), multimedia classrooms, or student iPad/laptop use. This gives the teacher the flexibility to make a lesson adapted to not just the age or level of the class, but the available technology as well. In addition, there are teacher explanations for each resource. The materials include: 1. The story video. This is an animated story about a group of 6 people attending a house party to celebrate the owner's purchase of a new painting. There is a blackout and one person will die. The students will watch and listen to find clues as to what happened to the victim and deduce the identity of the murderer. 2. A student task sheet consisting of 8 pages in PDF, containing and outline of the story, resources for recording the timeline and suspect movements, the murder scene, suspect motives, story cards and print for essay writing. 3. A set of separate motive cards with pictures of the suspects. In color and black and white. 4. The same suspect motives as a short movie. This is available as an online video. It can be used where listening is the focus of the lesson. 5. A separate worksheet for new vocabulary for those students that need it. 6. A 12 page PDF explanation resource for teachers. 7. As of November 2017 have added a small video of the suspect motives to this, along with a promo Youtube video of part of the movie. Altogether this resource contains 34 pages in PDF. Halloween History - Graphic Reader and Video

(0)
My aim in creating this graphic reader is to provide a concise, clear and interesting introduction to the history of Halloween, from it’s roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain through it’s mixing with and absorption by other religions such as the Roman festivals of Pomona and Feralia and the Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day through to the customs it has taken on in the modern era such as trick or treating and others. I’ve also added ‘odd facts’ about Halloween to each page to add some humour to the subject. RESOURCE CONTENTS 1. An eleven page PDF color version of the graphic reader and a second set of word and review quizzes for each of the five pages of the text. This can be used on iPads or any other electronic device as a slide show or in a book reader. 2. The same PDF comic in black and white for easy printing. 3. Three sets of writing prompts to extend the topic. The first is a timeline summary exercise of the history of Halloween. the second is a set of story prompts to write Halloween animal themed horror stories. The third is a set of essay prompts for writing a comparative essay between the customs of Halloween and other similar worldwide festivals such as Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’, China’s ‘Hungry Ghost’ and Japan’s ‘Obon’. 4. There are also some simple word games such as a word search, cross word and hangman for students to review some of the language used in the text. The first two are PDF prints. The hangman game is html with a link for the teacher that can be give to students who have suitable devices. 5. Teachers notes page. 6. As of October 16th 2017 I have added a youtube animated video to this which teachers can use as an introduction, review, or students can access on their own devices. Jekyll and Hyde Part 1 - Video Multimedia Lesson

This is part one of what will be a 6 part series of Robert Louis Stevenson's Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It is an animated movie adaptation of the book and as in most such cases it does not adhere strictly to the original work. I made it with the idea of using different media as a comparison to the Robert Louis Stevenson work. The first video covers the beginning of the story where Utterson discovers Hyde late one night and later persuades him to pay compensation for his ill treatment of a young girl he had knocked over and stepped on. The movie and comic book style script included her are a fun and engaging way of introducing students to this classic gothic horror story. The materials included would be ideal for bringing the story to younger learners or students of ESL As well as the video, which is in m4v format, this product also includes; 1. Two comic book style versions of the movie script in PDF. One in colour which can be used for presentation purposes by the teacher or on students devices such as notebook computers or iPads. The other is BW for easier printing. Both comic books also include writing and question tasks at the end of the story. 2. A PDF worksheet for students to practice some of the vocabulary which may be new to them. This also includes a separate answer print. 3. A teacher explanation outlining the purpose and uses of the video and comic book and also containing the answers to the questions on the comic book. This is part two of my 6 part series of Robert Louis Stevenson's Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It is an animated movie adaptation of the book and as in most such cases it does not adhere strictly to the original work. I made it with the idea of using different media as a comparison to the Robert Louis Stevenson work. This second video covers the part of the story where the lawyer Utterson attends a party at the house of his friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll. Later, after the other guests have left he has a discussion with Jekyll about the dangers of his relationship with Edward Hyde. Later, a maid witnesses a late night altercation between Hyde and an old man that results in the evil Hyde murdering the old man. The movie and comic book style script included her are a fun and engaging way of introducing students to this classic gothic horror story. Gothic Horror Elements - A Multimedia Introduction

These materials have been designed to provide a brief introduction to Gothic horror and are also great for Halloween! I have provided a variety of multi media resources including two short animated videos and a ‘Prezi’ (like a Powerpoint but more fun!) along with associated quizzes and texts as a PDF resource which can be tailored to the needs of the students. There are two versions in this package. One for older students, and one for students of ESL or younger students The materials can be printed out and used in a multi media classroom, and the Prezi can be downloaded and installed on a computer for ease of use. Alternatively, copies of the PDF, which contains links to all online materials, can be purchased for students to install on their own computers so they can access everything directly. 16 pages The lesson contains; Version 1: Ages 14-16 1. PDF student and teacher documents that give an outline of the history of Gothic horror stories and the elements that are recognized as important to the genre. 2. A link on the PDF worksheet to view online or download the Prezi which contains 9 slides that describe the elements of a Gothic story visually with humorous speech bubbles and full narration. 3. Links to two animated videos and learning materials for new vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension quizzes along with a comic writing exercise. 4. A set of teachers notes and quiz answers along with a contact e.mail for enquiries. Version 2: Younger students or those studying ESL 1. The same PDF student and teacher resources.
